Psychosomatics in Fashion: How Our Feelings Affect Our Appearance and Performance

As a fashion stylist and self enrichment accountant, I understand the powerful impact that fashion can have on our mental and emotional well-being. In this blog post, I want to explore the concept of psychosomatics in fashion, and how our feelings can manifest themselves in the way we present ourselves to the world through our clothing and personal style.

First, let's define psychosomatics. In the field of psychology, psychosomatics refers to the relationship between our mind and body, and how psychological factors can affect physical health and vice versa. In the context of fashion, this means that the clothes we wear and the way we present ourselves can have a profound effect on our mental and emotional state, as well as our overall performance and well-being.

According to Karen Pine, a professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, "the clothes we wear have a powerful effect on how we think and feel about ourselves and how others respond to us." (Pine, 2011). By choosing to wear certain clothes, we can influence our own mood and behavior, as well as the way we are perceived by others.

One way that our feelings can manifest themselves in our fashion choices is through the use of color. Different colors can have different psychological effects on our mood and behavior, and we may be drawn to certain colors when we are feeling a certain way. For example, red is often associated with passion and excitement, while blue is often associated with calmness and serenity. By choosing to wear certain colors, we can influence our own mood and behavior, as well as the way we are perceived by others.

According to Karen Pine, "clothing can have a huge impact on how we feel about ourselves. It can boost our confidence and self-esteem, or it can make us feel self-conscious and uncomfortable." (Pine, 2013). By paying attention to the garments and accessories we choose to wear, we can gain insight into our own emotional state and how we want to present ourselves to the world.

In addition to the impact of our own feelings on our fashion choices, it's important to consider the influence of social media and other external factors on our style and appearance. In today's digital age, it's easy to become overly stimulated by the constant stream of images and messages we see on social media and other platforms.

This can create a disconnect between our own feelings and desires and the image we feel pressure to present to the world. It's important to remember to be mindful of this influence and to stay true to ourselves, rather than trying to meet the unrealistic expectations that may be imposed upon us by external sources.

According to Ekant Veer and Jérôme R. Busemeyer, "clothing has the ability to serve as a means of nonverbal communication and self-presentation that can influence the social and psychological aspects of the wearer." (Veer and Busemeyer, 2014). By understanding the concept of psychosomatics in fashion, we can gain insight into our own feelings and how they manifest themselves in our appearance and performance. And by being mindful of the influence of external factors, such as social media, we can stay true to ourselves and present ourselves authentically to the world.
